Gone are the days when one bowled along the open road with only the sound of bird-song (and probably the transmission!) in your ears, navigating with the aid of 6 foot square maps (like trying to read 'The Times' in a wind-tunnel) or with directions from the jovial local Bobby (whatever happened to them?). No, our discerning Defender driver demands a little more in the way of comfort and convenience, these days, anathema though that may be to the bearded and be-sandaled die-hard "enthusiasts".
