Petrol Engines

You may download a "Petrol Engines Upgrades" Brochure here:
While this page is principally about 'upgrades' which rightly refers to performance, it is equally applicable to the care and attention with which the engines are built. When comparing prices with other suppliers it should be borne in mind that ALL JE engines are built to at least Club Motorsport standards. They are NOT a collection of bog-standard bits thrown together for profit expediency. In addition to the usual "rebore and bearings" as recommended by 'experts'(!) ALL JE engines are based on a thoroughly cleaned and de-burred block, new core (freeze) plugs and bungs, improved oil-ways and oil returns; all rotating parts fully balanced, all combustion volumes balanced, re-cut and shaped valve seats, inlet/exhaust tracts smoothed and de-burred AS AN ABSOLUTE MINIMUM. All this and more on a standard rebuilt engine. Thus, it is usually more cost effective to fit a JE rebuilt engine rather than attempt repairs to individual sub-assemblies which will inevitably result in further repairs sooner rather than later.
Jaguar/Land Rover AJV8 Engine
Normally Aspirated JE are still devoting development resources to enhancing the normally aspirated AJ engine, even though it is coming to the end of its OE use. This is principally because JE intend to continue using it in the 'JE-35' Anniversary Edition Defender. To that end JE have some exciting developments to offer, notably our big-valve polished and ported heads. Please enquire for full details of these components which give up to 60 more brake-horsepower than standard, with suitably re-programmed electronics. We would also draw your attention to the fact that, with its surfeit of power for normal use, the AJV8 is particularly suited to LPG modification which gives dramatically enhanced economy. However, the AJV8 engine has been found to be susceptible to valve recession when using LPG due to the valve-seat material used in OE manufacture, and the "dry" nature of the gas with no lubrication additives as found in petrol. JE have developed two alternative configurations to overcome this problem.
Standard valve size: JE-modified heads with 16 all new 'beryllium-free' valve seats per head. These valve seats are state-of-the-art, incorporating as they do the latest NASCAR-developed alloys of copper, nickel and unobtainium(!) These alloys were developed to replace the copper/nickel/beryllium seats previously used due to the highly toxic nature of airborne beryllium dust. JE can machine and fit these valve seats in-house, unlike the previously developed tungsten carbide seats which were, not surprisingly, as hard as our tungsten carbide cutters and thus had to be machined off-site at not inconsiderable cost. These JE valve seats are machined, cut and ground to the optimum shape for performance and long life. Valves individually hand-ground to fit individual seats, ports shaped to improve gas flow and camshafts and followers fitted to optimise minimum tolerance specifications. Per pair (exchange) £1328.00 Fitting £1015.00.

For total peace of mind, especially when intending to cover very high mileages, it is wise not to rely entirely on 'FlashLube' with an LPG converted normally aspirated AJ engine and to fit the JE modified heads. In any event, LPG converted cars should always be run on neat petrol from time to time. With the Supercharged engine (see below) it is very strongly recommended that the JE modified heads are fitted when having an LPG conversion. In fact, JE will not carry out such a conversion without written indemnity from the customer.
Forced Induction JE have a total engine performance package which has received rave reviews in the specialist press (see "Press Comments") This upgrade gives nearly 50bhp over the standard unit and when fitted in the Range Rover "Sport S/C" lowers the 0-60mph time to around 6 seconds. Truly awesome performance for a luxury multi-purpose vehicle. Yet further performance is available in "Zulu" specification where extensive cylinder-head modification and alternative valves yield 460 - 480 bhp.

JE 'Zulu' Big-Valve heads: In the supercharged engine the exhaust valves endure extremely high temperatures under full load. On performance tuned versions it is most advisable to fit ultra-high specification 'Iconel' exhaust valves and the JE 'trick' beryllium-free valve seats. The BV heads have similar specification to the JE standard hard-seat heads detailed above but have larger exhaust valves (32.5mm) Per pair (exchange) £1842.00 Fitting £1015.00.
These heads are strongly recommended for a supercharged LPG conversion.
Rover V8
JE’s expertise with the ex-GM Rover V8 engine is legendary. For over 30 years JE have been at the absolute forefront of development for this classic engine. No other company comes remotely near the knowledge-base accumulated by JE as a result of original research and thousands of hours of dynamometer and road testing. That Land Rover Ltd purchased the entire JE 4.2 litre technology for use in the Vogue LSE flagship model is illustrative of JE’s standing in the industry. JE continue that collaboration today with the current manufacturers of this superb engine.
JE organise their product range into “families” which are further sub-divided into specific final-use groups. The vast experience of JE engineers and senior staff ensures that, whatever your requirements, you will receive the best Rover V8 engine for the job, be it a Dakar entry, touring Classic, racing Morgan or anything in between!

Normally Aspirated Rover V8 Fast Road Short engines
Block: 4.6 based (or 4.0), oil flow-ways optimised, oil galleries physically cleaned and re-plugged. (96 mm bore versions, new flanged liners fitted)Crank: polished and carefully balanced, (86.3 mm stroke cranks are tuftrided) Rods: 4.6 rods selected, crack tested and balanced. 4.8 and 5.0 rods are JE’s own forged 4340 steel, crack tested, stress relieved, shot-peened, and balanced. Pistons: 4.6 and 4.8 pistons are standard Land Rover 94.0 mm pistons, selected from the largest grade diameter (valve cut outs machined if necessary) all balanced. 5.0 litre pistons are 96.0 mm diameter, forged, fully floating pin, with Teflon/MoS2 coated skirts.
(N.B. We can also build 4.8 litre engines using the 96 mm bore and 82 mm stroke, effectively the 4.6 crank and rods, with the 5.0 litre piston and block. This is marginally more effective and free-revving above 5,000 rpm with an appropriate cam, but more expensive.) Engines are all supplied with new cam and lifters. For 4.6 engines in heavier cars it is usually best to retain the standard cam. For lighter cars and where engine tuning can allow more than 5,700 and up to 6,500 rpm, the JE '202' cam gives more power above 4,500 rpm. The '202' cam works well with the 5.0 engine, in all applications. For installations using the older style front engine cover (i.e. having a distributor), cam recommendations include the JE '101' cam for most fast road uses, but again, in lighter cars a more sporty cam can be used. The Crane '218' profile is a good Stage2 fast road and 'track day' cam. The Crane ‘226’ is also well suited to light sports cars such as the Morgan or TVR. For an additional fee the engine can be built up with customer supplied sump, front pulley, and flywheel, etc., but not manifolds, heads, or any ancillaries. A customer supplied water pump can also be fitted within this price. Balancing of flywheel and/or front pulley, if not supplied with the exchange engine, is also charged for.
