Cylinder Heads (cont)

'Standard  JE Build', Standard (40 & 34 mm) valves, re-cut seats, with the ports cleaned up and blended.

'Sport' heads. Larger valves (41.5 & 37 mm), ports as above and enlarged within constraints of manifolds. Manifolds should be checked and may need some minor material removal to work well with sport heads.

'2A' heads.  The same valves as sport heads, but the ports are enlarged further. The inlet manifolds should be fully worked through as well, to take advantage of the larger ports. Special, or tubular fabricated exhaust manifolds should be used with 2A heads.

'Big valve' heads.  New larger inlet valve seats and valves (43 & 37 mm), with further porting work. This is the largest type that would be recommended with standard inlet manifold casting types (e.g. Twin Throttle plenum manifold). Race type inlet manifolds are also suitable. Bronze valve guides would always be used with this specification.

'Race' heads.  New larger exhaust valves and seats (43 & 38 mm) and the valve stem is narrower, thus obstructing the port less. The valve guide is obviously of a smaller bore, as well. This is the ultimate set up for the standard casting. We strongly recommend the use of the latest casting type (4.0 and 4.6 style), as there is a little more metal to work with for these ultimate port shapes.

Retail Prices (Outright):    with gaskets (WG)      no gaskets (SNG)

Rocker Shafts:
If using Land Rover rocker shafts for speeds in excess of 6,000 rpm, up to 6,800 rpm, we would recommend our reinforced billet steel end supports. Full race roller rocker shafts, using needle roller bearings and improved shaft supports, are also available.

Standard type, new, fitted to JE heads (pair)                                      £165.00
Reinforced, steel billet end post type (pair)                                        £400.00
Full race roller rocker shafts, complete (from . . . )                               POA.

Inlet Manifolds
It is essential to do at least some tidying and matching of the inlet manifold to take full advantage of your JE heads. All the following assumes the manifold is supplied by the customer.

Earlier 'Lucas' (14CUX or GEMS ) inlet manifolds:
Minor 'blueprinting' work, cleaning and matching, to help air flow with both 'Std. JE' and 'Sport' heads-                                                                                         £180.00

Fit larger aluminium intake air horns (41 mm bore) in the plenum, and work through, gas-flowed fully to suit 'Sport' or '2A' heads-                                                                                         £650.00
More work to above  and use 45 mm bore aluminium air horns, to suit '2A' or 'Big Valve' heads-                                                                                         £850.00

Bosch/Thor type inlet manifolds:
Significant material removal in certain keys areas, together with general cleaning up and matching work, to suit 'Sport' heads-                                                                                         £260.00

Plenum Chambers and Throttle Bodies

Single Throttle Plenum Chamber (for Lucas 14 CUX or GEMS ).

Deburr and polish to improve air flow into throttle-                                 £60.00
Disassemble, bore out and fit 70 mm throttle (standard is 65 mm), deburr, polish, and reassemble-                                                                                                      £180.00

Bosch/Thor, separate throttle type:

Deburr and polish to improve air flow into throttle-                                  £60.00
Disassemble, bore out and fit 71.5 mm throttle (standard is 68 mm), deburr, polish, and reassemble-                                                                                                       £150.00

Twin Throttle Plenum Chamber
We can also supply our own cast aluminium version of the famous Twin Throttle Plenum Chamber (sometimes incorrectly called 'Twin Plenum'), using larger (68 mm) throttle discs, with the throttles balanced and operated from the centre, between the throttles. This comes complete with the base which holds 45 mm bore air horns, and a fully worked inlet manifold, to suit '2A' or 'Big Valve' heads. Using a single one piece casting for the plenum means the throttles are stable and remain well adjusted, alternative designs using carbon fibre for the plenum or 'bolt-on' throttle bodies are less stable. (Customer to supply lower manifold.) Total price-   £1,550.00

ECU tuning when fitting modified heads
We have a system for tuning the Lucas GEMS ECU (Range Rover 38a, 1995 to 1999) which is completely adequate for normal uses, and this system was used on our Supercharged Range Rovers with no problems. Typical cost to fit new chips to the ECU would be £600 per unit. Cost for a bespoke tune, including Dynamometer running time, is £1,800.

Prices for the Bosch ECU (Range rover 38a and Discovery 1999 on) are similar, but we have found the ECU adapts very well to 'docile' tunes up to 280 bhp.

Installation
Where the engine is to be installed in a car without any major changes to the configuration, the basic charge for removing and re-installing the engine is £800. This price includes a new oil filter, oil, and an oil change after running in.

The following may add to the cost of removal/installation, or may be added by the customer, if required:

Air conditioning system, drain and protect.
Distributor reconditioning, or timing curve modification.
Coil or ignition amplifier pack replacement.
Ignition lead replacement.
Coolant hose replacement.
Radiator cleaning or reconditioning.
Throttle cable renewal.
Air filter renewal.

Clutch and clutch mechanism.
Uprated Clutch parts are available, for example:

The price for a cover and driven plate from AP Racing depends on type but prices start around £390.

On most Rover/Land Rover installations improvements to the release bearing carrier and arm are also required to deal with the extra pressure, adding £65 to the cost. Fitting is free with an engine change.

Automatic gearbox reconditioning:
While having the engine rebuilt, it is a sensible time to rebuild the transmission. Typical cost is £1,250, including uprated internal clutches and fitting. Reconditioning of the transfer gearbox (4x4 Land Rover) can also be carried out, from £500.
